The idea for Fathers Day came from a woman who had the idea while at a Mothers Day sermon the year before. She had been raised by her father after her mother had died giving birth. She wanted him to know how special he was to her and how much she appreciated his selflessness in raising the family. His birthday was in June. |
| In 1924 the idea that the third Sunday in June be Fathers Day received presidential support. It was in 1966 that a proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as Father's Day was signed. | |
| Traditionally it was intended as a celebration to honour fathers. However grandfathers, stepfathers, friends and brothers can be included - a day to honour any man considered loving and kind. | |
